Image of George Washington is based on the oil painting by Gilbert Stuart (1755-1828), Rembrandt Peale (1778-1860). Reproduction here has been slightly enhanced by John R. Grala to correct color cast and digital noise in the original photographic reproduction. The original photographic reproduction has been published in pre-1923 materials, including p. 442 of The Life of George Washington and p. 79 of Early American Painters. The original photographic media is in the public domain in the United States. This image originated from the copy at Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute, Williamstown.
