Grand Master M∴W∴ Vincent Libone's Message

St. Valetine's Day and President's Day

New York, NY — Thursday, 9 February 2012

In a few days the calendar will remind us that it is St. Valentine's Day, a time to pause and express our love and appreciation for those of the opposite sex with whom we have a special attachment. Of course, there are many other special days designated for expressing such sentiments ... such as Mother's Day, Father's Day, Birthdays, Anniversaries and so on throughout the year. This is good, but as Masons we are reminded that our ties to family and loved ones is something to be nurtured every day.

Certainly, each time we leave our home to attend a Masonic meeting or function, we should give thought to our loved ones for their understanding. As a husband and a father we are grateful to our wife and family for the time we are away. Of course, we are often able to include our loved ones in our Masonic activities, and this too is good! But whatever else we do this week, we should stop and say "thank you" to those special people at home with whom we share that common bond of love and understanding. Together, let's make this a special St. Valentine's Day. I was reminded of the words of the old song, "What the world needs now is love, sweet LOVE!" Never has this simple message been more true. Happy St. Valentine's Day to you and those you love from Ginny and me, Gail and our Deputy Grand Master Jim Sullivan, and our entire elected and appointed Grand Line.

Later this month our nation will pause again to observe President's Day, this year on Monday, February 20th . Of course, there will be many celebrations devoted to our most notable Presidents Washington and Lincoln. We, as Masons, have a special affiliation with these two great leaders, our Brother George Washington especially. We should take this opportunity to reflect on how very important these two men were in helping to mold the course of this nation. Once again, let us show our patriotism and pay special homage to their memory.

And, as always, we ask that you keep the men and women of our armed forces and first responders, past and present, in your thoughts and prayers for their well being.

With all good wishes,

Fraternally,
M∴W∴ VINCENT LIBONE
Grand Master of Masons in the State of New York

A Bright Spot in Humanity

The Largest Evacuation by Water in History

New York, NY — Tuesday, 11 September 2001

Many times when there is tragedy and human suffering we become engulfed in the horrific event and often overlook the bright light of humanity that comes together to soothe that pain and suffering. Many heroic stories are never told as they are too painful to relive. If we look back in history we can see many instances where the impossible was accomplished by ordinary people coming together. We as Masons, hold these very tenets close in our heart and applaud the many unsung heroes across the world. Let us take a look back in time for an inspirational story of people coming together to do the impossible. Masonic Education: What does the designation A.L. signify?

Provided by Brother James Rizzo

Oswego, NY — Wednesday, 18 January 2012

Brother James Rizzo

And now for a little Masonic "Light"... What is the designation A.L.? And what does it signify?

My Brothers, we have all heard the Secretary in Lodge when reading the minutes state the date in a manner such as: Tuesday, January 17th, 2012, A.L. 6012. So what does A.L. stand for and the year listed as 6012? That, it turns out, is a very weighty question, and bears a bit of a discussion. Most commonly and in this present time, A. L. stands for the Latin words, Anno Lucis, which translate as "in the Year of Light". And that year has been determined to be 4000 years prior than the present year, hence the year designated as 6012. This enumeration of the year is used extensively throughout the Masonic Fraternity but it is not exclusive to Masonry. It has been used on Masonically prepared cornerstones of buildings, Masonic documents, certificates and plaques. Ultimately this dating can be traced back to the calendar work of The Bishop of Armagh (Ireland), James Ussher (1581-1656), whose calendar dated the Creation of the World at approximately 4000 years prior, and, as Genesis states: 1:1 - In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. 1:2 - And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. 1:3 - And God said, Let there be light: and there was light. 1:4 - And God saw the light, and it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness. Genesis 1, 1-4, KJV Thus the date is called, the year of Light or beginning. Now there are many different ideas and systems for numbering years, such as 2012 A.D., A.D. standing for Anno Domini, meaning, "In the year of our Lord", or since the birth of Christ. Some arcane sources say the date Anno Lucis, derives from when Masonry first brought its light into the world, and for a time the designation for Masonic dates was listed as A.M. or Anno Masonry.

Brother Wesley Cunningham Lake Placid Lodge No. 834

Oswego, NY — Friday, 14 October 2011

Masonry In Action

The Masons of Lake City Lodge would like to recognize one of our Brothers from Lake Placid Lodge No. 834. Brother Wesley Cunningham went above and beyond the call of duty on one recent Sunday morning while performing his duties at work to help a fellow traveler to the beautiful Lake Placid area.

When all was said and done, the traveler, a member of Lake City Lodge, asked one final question of the man. That is when they instantly looked at each other and knew they were Brothers in the Great and Noble Fraternity of Freemasonry. A warm and fraternal handshake followed and a new bond of friendship was born. Masonry in Action.

Master's Message

From the East

Oswego, NY — 25 April 2011

From the East

Wow! It has been a jam-packed, fast-paced year! We should all be extremely proud of our many accomplishments.

I would like to thank you for allowing me to serve as Master this year. Throughout the entire journey, I have learned a great deal about the different aspects of Masonry that makes it the best fraternal organization in the world. I have also learned a little about myself.

Throughout the year, the officers and Brethren of Lake City Lodge have helped organize our events, performed near-perfect ritual, made great strides on the progress of the building, and increased communication and collaboration with the sisters of Lake City Victoria Chapter #205. We have had some obstacles along the way, but through teamwork, dedication, and understanding, we were able to eliminate them.

I leave the office of Master with many fond memories of fellowship, community outreach, excellent ritual, building progress, great communication, travelling gavels, further light, and most importantly, Brotherhood. It has been a truly memorable year. Thank you!

Sincerely and Fraternally,
W Patrick Fasulo

Adam Gagas Presentation on Riverside Cemetery and Page Memorial Chapel

Oswego, NY — 8 February 2011

Lake City Lodge is honored to have Mr. Adam Gagas present information on one of Oswego's great historic sites - the Page Memorial Chapel and the Riverside Cemetery. The stone gothic structure features a stunning collection of stained glass windows by Louis Comfort Tiffany. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the grounds are one of the first cemetaries in the USA to be designed to incorporate the natural featues into its design. The meandering pathways through and around ponds, woods, and the hilly terrian are similar to New York's famous Central Park. A major renovation to protect and preserve the chapel was completed in the fall of 2010. Adam will discuss the importance of preserving this legacy for future generations and the need to gain public awareness and support for this non-sectarian cemetery. Please join us at 6:30PM for dinner, 7:30PM meeting. For more information, please visit the Riverside Cemetery website.

Shrine Overview and Presentation by Ed Miller, DSA

Masonry in Action - At its Best

Oswego, NY — Tuesday, 14 September 2010

Ed Miller, DSA

One of Lake City Lodge's most distinguished members, Ed Miller, DSA, provided an outstanding overview and presentation on the activities of the Shriners. This was an incredibly inspirational presentation on how the members of the international organization step up to the plate when all other options seem hopeless. Ed provided examples of how the member network operates from a local to an international level helping children and their parents deal with life critical illnesses.

In one example, Ed discussed how an Oswego county child, whose parents were told would not survive after leaving a Syracuse hospital were taken under the wing of the Shriners. The local Shriners reached out to their network of medical experts and took the child to the Shrine Hospital for Children in Boston. She is home today and living a happy and healthy life.

Ed Miller is a soft spoken and very sensitive individual. When he shared his commemorative certificate in the Shriners $100 million dollar club - 1,000,000 Masons strong, giving $100 dollars each - he said "it is one of the proudest and most honorable things I can do".

Click on the image for a larger view of Distinuished Service Award recipient, Ed Miller and make sure you congratulate him on a fine job.

Masons Reach for Clouds

Lake City Lodge No. 127 Launches Cloud / Grid Computing Effort

Oswego, NY — Thursday, 19 August 2010

A Masonic Lodge in upstate New York on the shore of Lake Ontario has decided to attack the age old problem of where to put stuff so you know where it is and can find it again in the future. The Masons in Oswego, New York have a long history dating back to 1820. The Lodge archives and records represent a virtual treasure for these Masons. Historical events seem to be happening for this group all the time, right up to the present.

Lake City Lodge No. 127 needed a method to archive a significant amount of information associated with activities. John R. Grala from QC Communications described it like this: "Masonic activities extend from local members to the community at a lodge, district, state, national and worldwide level. A busy Lodge like Lake City needed a more effective way to disseminate information amongst members and to the general public, while self-archiving all of this information. At the same time the Masons want to index and store historical records in a digital format so it can be preserved for future generations. By leveraging enterprise class technologies, such as Cloud and Grid computing models and advanced software technologies, Masons can now implement purpose built solutions that are not only eloquent, but easy to use and cost effective.

High profile programs including Masonichip International have also announced they will be exploiting similar technology to support the popular Masonic Safety Identification Program across North America".

RW John Krauss, DDGM Presents Grandfathers Apron

Family Heirloom Presented to Nephew

Oswego, NY — Saturday, 19 June 2010

RW John Krauss

At the conclusion of the installation of officers for the 2010/2011 year, the RW John Krauss, DDGM surprised everyone when he presented a rare family heirloom to the Lodge - his Grandfathers Master's apron from 1954. The apron of fine silk and exquisite embroidery complemented by pure silver thread is quite rare.

Even more stunning was when RW Krauss presented the apron to his nephew W Dave Johnson as he concluded his term as Master of Lake City Lodge No. 127 for the 2009/2010 year. Make sure to click on the image for a larger view of this rare apron and a joyous ceremonial moment for RW John Krauss and W David Johnson.
